About Me

Introduction

My name is Anthony Phillips, and I live and work here in the university town of Loughborough. I have lived and worked in Loughborough for around 25 years, and in that time I have had many jobs from retail manager, sales and IT to now freelance graphic designer.

I have been working as a freelance graphic designer for around 9 years. I first started freelancing when I was made redundant from my previous employment. At the time it was pretty terrifying, but probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. It pushed me into taking the leap to self-employment, which I wouldn’t have normally done had I been in full-time employment having two children and also to provide for my family.

I have always had a passion for design since I was a very young lad, mucking about on my ZX spectrum 48k! making characters and drawing stories and scenes. I used to do a few jobs for friends and family when I was employed and feedback was always pretty positive “You should do this for a living” so I knew I had the ability to succeed if I was determined enough. And here I am 9 years later, making a good living and enjoying every minute. Nothing gives you more pride than working for yourself, doing a good job, getting paid and getting good feedback from happy clients.

Do you travel or work from home?

During the past 9 years I have built up a number of regular clients, so it is more efficient for me to work at my home office in Loughborough. That way I can keep my travelling to a minimum and be at my desk, available to anyone that needs me.

Being at home also makes me very reliable, as you can be sure I will pick up the phone when you call or at a minimum return your email within an hour or two, as long as I am not on holiday. Nowadays, it is very efficient and easy to do projects while online with Dropbox, Skype, phone and email.

What is your daily rate?

My hourly and daily rate is set around the Midlands average for freelance graphic designers. However, I normally quote up front for projects, on receipt of a brief or a good outlined idea. I find that this is more beneficial for my clients, and myself, as they know what they are paying, and I know what I am being paid. It also allows my clients to manage their budgets effectively and be confident they are getting everything they need without any surprises.

Is this your full time job being a freelancer?

Yes it is. It is very beneficial for my clients, as during the working day they can get hold of me to discuss projects, changes etc without having to wait or being unable to contact me for a few days.

Are you reliable?

There is nothing worse than using a freelancer that is not contactable when you need them. It causes unnecessary delays in your project work flow and can effect your business, so right from the start I have made myself full time and available. I pride myself on being professional, relaxed and reliable, be straight with the client, no BS! I find just being straight with my clients and doing what is asked of you is a great foundation for long term partnerships.
